CHAPTER NINETEEN

It wasn’t long before Becky came marching in the front door, slamming it behind her and rattling the copper pots hanging up in the kitchen. She stomped into the kitchen, where Laura was packing the last of the items into the wicker basket on the table.

Becky was both unkempt and short on patience. Laura didn’t expect anything less and true to form, Becky fired the first shot.

“What the fuck, Laura?” she spat.

“Sorry I took the boat, but I needed to get back to my job.” “It’s not even your boat, it’s Greer’s. Why didn’t you walk around?” she snapped.

“I was hoping you’d understand.”

Becky stood with her arms firmly folded across her chest and a killer scowl.

“I work for your mother, remember? I had to be back at seven a.m. I was late as it was, but fortunately, she was understanding.”

“Shame she didn’t sack you.” Laura recoiled, shaking her head. “So, where’s the old cow?”

“She’s out with Rawlings. She’s gone to the police station, see if they can put together another search.”

Becky muttered under her breath. “Yeah, well, that’s pointless.”

Laura caught the last of her comment but chose to ignore it. As much as it pained her to resist the temptation to rise to Becky’s selfish attitude, she needed her on side to deliver a plateful of doubt and a pinch of “does she, or doesn’t she know?”

“I get you’re not interested in what happened to Jack, but your mother deserves some answers, don’t you think?”

Becky shrugged and grunted a response, her eyes not landing on Laura. Laura was hoping for a slither of compassion from her, but knowing what devious act she’d been part of, Laura was surprised that she even expected it. Laura thought about her own mother and the pain and hurt she caused her growing up. A similar situation, maybe. Her dad was better off without her mother. Laura meant her mother no malice. Not even in her darkest moment, surrounded by the feeling of total abandonment, could she wish her mother gone. Mrs Monroe wasn’t a bad person. Ignorant about her daughter’s struggles, but never anything other than a parent trying to understand her child.

Mrs Monroe deserved the truth. No matter the pain it caused. Today, Laura was going to get it, even if it meant losing her job.

“Think you need to take a shower,” said Laura, moving on. “Is Greer around?” she added.

“Gone home to get changed.”

Laura nodded. “Can we move on?”

“Guess so,” Becky shrugged as she picked the debris from under her nails.

“I figured another picnic was on the cards. I don’t get much chance to socialise, and last night made me realise what a laugh I had.” Laura pulled a bottle of red wine from the basket and cocked a wink at Becky.

Becky gave her a wide grin. “Well, ain’t you full of surprises?” she beamed.

If only you knew about the surprise that I’ve got in store for you.

“Figured if your mother was out, why not take the opportunity?”

Becky’s eyes were wide and aroused.
